  • National Volunteer Week

Thank you to everyone who came to help celebrate the National Volunteer Week & Earth Day and spent the morning with us. This year, we had an absolute pleasure to host the community BBQ breakfast in Coorow and also Green Head which this was combined with Community Clean Up Day event as part of the Earth Day.
The Shire of Coorow would like to thank all the dedicated volunteers that serve our communities. Volunteers are the “Change Makers who take action to make the world a
better place.”

To find out more about how you can get involved in volunteering or if you would like to join a club or community organisation in the area, reach out to one of our community groups from the following link https://tinyurl.com/2bm2askj.

During the Clean Up Day in Green Head, there were 20 volunteers altogether helped inspire and work with communities to take care our beautiful planet for the future. The participants were divided into several groups, they went for a walk to various locations, young children had opportunity to chat and learn from the volunteers, and after an hour and a half of collecting everyone returned to the hall to sort and weigh the rubbish and to fill out a data sheet to send to the Tangaroa Blue Foundation, an Australian Marine Debris Initiative. Altogether the weight was 88 kg. A shout out to Green Head Coast Care for this great initiative. Nature is beautiful, so get outside and enjoy the sunshine!

As part of the Shire's Marketing & Promotion program to promote the value of volunteering to the local community, beautiful free merchandise that were made locally are available at your local CRCs. Its limited, so grab fast and help promote our local community groups. In March, we also had an opportunity to collaborate with the local community groups and sporting clubs for a short video project. We really appreciate our volunteers who came together to participate in this community project and allowed the Shire to capture some of your enormous work you have done for the community. They are just some of the 45 amazing community groups we
have in our Shire. Check out this video on the Shire Facebook, we hope it inspires you!

As conclusion, we hope everyone had a wonderful day, thank you Green Coast Care and Coorow CRC for assisting in organising this event.

  • School Civic Visits Program

The Shire had a blast recently hosting the Coorow Primary School students, that visited the Coorow Shire office on the 29th March 2023. Our CEO, Mia Maxfield was very pleased to welcome the students, show them the new look of the Shire office, present certificates and ‘welcome bag’ to all of them. Shire staff also enjoyed the Q&A session. Congrats to the students who attended this program. We hope through this initiative we can inspire the young people with more career options for their future.

Special thanks to Miss Herbert, Miss Whyte, Miss Millsteed and all teachers from the Coorow Primary School for making this happen. We look forward to the next visit.

  • The Community Builders Program

Through the support of the Bank of I.D.E.A.S., Rural Aid and the Mid West Development Commission, a Community Builders Program has been organised for the late May - October 2023 period for interested residents from communities in the North Midlands, Mullewa, and surrounds.

The Community Builders Program is a six-month program that seeks to identify, encourage, and empower local residents to become more involved in building their community and its economy. A cluster of communities provides the geographical basis for the Program. Each participating community is represented by a community Team of two to six members. These community Teams meet together for monthly "Cluster Muster" Days that enable shared learning and discussion about community challenges, opportunities and options, enhance awareness of available resource, and the discovery of the diversity and interconnections of their local and regional economies.

  • Marketing & Promotion of Volunteering Program

The Shire of Coorow along with our CRCs would like to advise that recently we have been awarded funds of the Marketing and Promotion of Volunteering Grants from Department of Communities which administered by Volunteering WA to organize a Marketing & Promotion program. We are very excited and hoping to be able to deliver this project by collaborating with the local volunteers from all local community groups/organisation in the Shire of Coorow.

Aims:

The aim of this projects is to support local solutions that actively promote the value of volunteering to the local community that increase awareness and uptake of volunteering.

Background:

This opportunity is being offered in response to the feedback gathered from the North Midlands Regional Club Development Plan that the Shire had successfully developed together with all the sporting clubs which was conducted in March 2022, which some of them align with the Shire of Coorow Integrated Strategic Plan 2022-2032  to promote the value of volunteering to the local community.

Project:

Upgrade the Shire’s Marketing & Promotion media through Shire’s new website, brochures, merchandises, and a production of a 3-4mins video to capture some actions and activities of the community groups.

How to participate:

With currently there are around 45 community groups in the Shire, to help us understand the needs of each group, we would like to invite all interested community groups who would like to participate in this video project to submit an Expression of Interest in writing by completing the form here.
